Father's day means

There’s nothing quite like making your parents feel special through Mother’s Day and Father’s Day.

The two occasions, falling in March and June, give children the opportunity to say thank you to those who have raised them.

Whether you express that gratitude through a card, present, flowers or some other gesture is up to you.

Father’s Day is next up on Sunday 17 June.

But how come we celebrate these dates, and when did they begin?

Mother’s Day

In the UK we celebrate Mothering Sunday, a festival that’s religious in origin, and which is also celebrated in Guernsey, Ireland, Nigeria, Jersey and the Isle of Man.

As it’s a Christian holiday, it falls every year on the fourth day of Lent, the Christian period of fasting that leads up to Easter.

Nowadays, for most Brits, the day is actually a secular (and very commercial) celebration, like the one celebrated in the United States, which was founded by Anna Jarvis.

That one is celebrated on the second Sunday in May, and began in 1908.
